Moving and Transporting Cylinders

Cylinders get damaged and people get hurt more often during moving than during the actual work. A cylinder tipping off a cart, rolling onto a hand, or having its valve knocked in transit is the common story. Moving them the slow, boring, correct way prevents almost all of it.

The rule of thumb: before a cylinder travels any distance, make it safe to travel — cap on, regulator off, valve closed.

Before you move it

Prep the cylinder so nothing can go wrong in transit:

  • Close the cylinder valve.
  • Release the pressure from and remove the regulator.
  • Put the valve protection cap back on — it protects the valve if the cylinder falls.
  • Confirm it's the cylinder you mean to move and that it's labeled.

Moving it safely

Use the right equipment and never take shortcuts:

  • Move cylinders on a hand truck or cart designed for them, with the cylinder chained or strapped in place.
  • Never lift a cylinder by the valve or the cap, and never use them as a handle.
  • Don't drag, slide, or roll cylinders on their side; if you must reposition a capped cylinder short distances, tilt and roll it on its bottom edge under control.
  • Never carry a cylinder on your shoulder or drop it off a truck bed.
  • Keep cylinders clear of vehicle traffic and falling-object zones while staged.

Lifting and vehicle transport

When cylinders have to be lifted or hauled, do it with proper equipment:

  • Lift with a cradle, platform, or rack made for cylinders — never with a magnet or by a sling choked around the body.
  • Secure cylinders upright in the vehicle so they can't roll or fall, valves closed and capped.
  • Keep the load ventilated — don't transport cylinders in a sealed cab or trunk where a leak can build up.
  • Follow DOT requirements for transporting cylinders on public roads.
