First-Aid Kits and Supplies

A trained responder needs supplies to work with, and a kit that's locked in a trailer, half-empty, or soaked through is no help in an emergency. OSHA 1926.50(d) requires first-aid supplies that are actually usable when someone needs them.

This talk covers what the standard requires, what belongs in a kit, and the maintenance that keeps it ready.

What OSHA requires

  • First-aid supplies have to be easily accessible when required (1926.50(d)(1)).
  • Kit contents go in a weatherproof container with individual sealed packages for each type of item (1926.50(d)(2)).
  • The employer checks the kit before it's sent out on each job, and at least weekly on each job, to make sure used items are replaced (1926.50(d)(2)).

'Weatherproof' and 'checked weekly' aren't suggestions in construction — they're regulatory text. A kit exposed to rain and dust with nobody restocking it fails the standard and fails the worker.

What goes in the kit

OSHA's appendix points to the consensus standard ANSI/ISEA Z308.1 for minimum contents (the current editions sort kits into Class A and Class B fills). A basic kit generally includes:

  • Adhesive bandages, gauze pads, and roller gauze.
  • Trauma pads and a tourniquet or pressure dressing for serious bleeding.
  • Adhesive tape, scissors, and tweezers.
  • Antiseptic and burn treatment.
  • Nitrile gloves and a CPR barrier/breathing device.
  • An eyewash where quick flushing may be needed.

Match the kit to the crew size and the hazards on the job — a bigger crew or higher-hazard work needs more supplies, more kits, and the right specialized items.

Keep it stocked and findable

A kit is only ready if it's stocked and people can find it. Restock what gets used right away — the worst time to discover the gauze is gone is mid-emergency. Do the weekly check the standard requires, and don't let the kit become a junk drawer or wander off.

Everyone should know where the kits are located across the site, and where the AED is if there's one. Post it, point it out to new workers, and keep the access clear.
